Since 1977, when he founded his 125-member urban planning and architecture firm, Jon Adams Jerde, FAIA, has been developing theories and methodologies that have shaped multi-use communal places worldwide. Whether designing large-scale, multi-function urban districts in Japan, Holland or the United States, or focusing on small-scale facilities such as Steven Spielberg's GameWorks or the new Sam Goody stores, his mission has been to develop more humanistic public spaces rather than the object making of conventional architecture. His list of awards began with the Henry Clay Gold Medal and travel fellowship from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for outstanding student work in 1964. Several projects have been recognized by the AIA at the local, state and national levels, such as the Olympics, Horton Plaza, the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas and, most recently, Fremont Street Experience, Canal City Hakata and Beursplein; by Progressive Architecture magazine with an urban design citation for Ise Shima Resort in the Mie Prefecture of Japan and by "SM&SD" magazine for Sam Goody in Universal CityWalk. Canal City Hakata has received ten international awards to date: among them, the 1997 International Council of Shopping Centers' (ICSC) award for Innovative Design and Construction of a New Project; "Nikkei" newspaper's best new facilities award; and "The Gold Prize for Good Design" and "The Urban Landscape Award" from two ministries of the Japanese government. This year Beursplein has been recognized by the AIA, ICSC, Bouwprijs, and the Nederlandse Raad voor Winkelcentra. Mr. Jerde received the Golden Plate from the American Academy of Achievement in 1992, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1985, was named an AIA Fellow in 1990 and became the first recipient of the AIA's Pacific Rim Award for his global innovation and impact. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, Urban Land Institute (ULI), and the Architectural Guild at USC. He actively supports the profession and community with lectures and speeches worldwide, including Harvard's Graduate School of Design; the T.E.D. Conference (technology, entertainment and design); the International Design Conference in Aspen; ICSC, ULI, and the annual Chicago Humanities Conference. TOP |
